i really don't get crafts

UPDATED:  I HAVE THE FINAL RESULTS, and you'll have to scroll all the way down....

i'm subbing a kindergarten class for a coworker. we have to do daily crafty kind of projects so they can bring something back to their parents in an effort to feel like they are actually accomplishing something instead of acknowledging its over priced day care.

anyways i attempted a rather ambitious craft. It was sound in theory and i foresaw no possible problems.

i guess that was my first mistake.

ok here's how it goes...

1. blow up a balloon
2. put some flour in water
3. put some yarn in the flour and wrap around the balloon
4. put it somewhere for a few days until dry
5. pop balloon, color a paper bird and shove it in
6. presto, you have a bird cage with a bird inside.

here's how it actually happened:

1. balloon blowing fail. had to use the machine which was awesome.

2. recipe called for 1/4 cup flour, and 1 cup water. or maybe it was the other way around.
anyways this country doesn't use 'cups' it uses ml. and they don't use flour. but i figure rice flour is the same thing.

3. flour soaked yarn does not stick to balloons but drips off and causes flour covered  damage in all directions.

4. and so far this is the end result. they haven't dried yet but nothing suggests that it will be structurally sound enough to keep it shape and allow for paper bird insertion.
after drying i'll update with the success or failure or the project. wish me luck.

  2. Poor thing! But don't worry. The kids had a great time and they learned to be happy of successes but laugh at failures. And that rice flour has no gluten. Love you much, Dad
